Today, I messed around with something pretty cool and I can’t wait to share it with you guys. I’ve been playing with this watch style, the CopyOMEGA Ω X-33 Marstimer Classic Style. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but trust me, it’s awesome.

First off, I started by digging around for information about this watch. It turns out that the original OMEGA X-33 is powered by some quartz movement thing, the OMEGA calibre 5619. I don’t know much about watches, but I guess this is a big deal. I found some details about the real thing on some website, but that’s not what I’m after. I want to make a copy, a knock-off, you know? Not the real thing, just the style.

So, I thought about how to go about this. I could use some sort of programming to mimic the look. I remembered a bit about ASCII code from way back when. It’s like this old-school way of representing characters with numbers. Maybe I could use that to draw the watch face?

I spent a good chunk of the day messing with different ASCII characters, trying to get the shape of the watch right. It was a pain, honestly. Getting those circles and lines to look decent with just text characters was tough. I used this online chart I found to look up the codes for different symbols. It wasn’t perfect, but I managed to get something that kinda looked like the X-33.

Then came the tricky part – the hands of the watch. I wanted them to move, at least a little. I thought about using some kind of script to update the display, but I’m not really a coder. I did find this “rearrange equation” widget online, which was totally unrelated, but it got me thinking about how to change the positions of the hands over time. I messed around with it for a while, and let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. It was more like a jumbled mess than a moving watch hand.

But hey, I didn’t give up. I decided to simplify. I made a few versions of the watch face with the hands in different positions. It’s not dynamic, but it gives the illusion of movement if you switch between them fast enough. Like a flipbook, I guess? I can post a bunch of these images and scroll through it quickly to pretend it’s moving.

The Results

  • Version 1: Hands at 10:10.
  • Version 2: Hands at 10:15.
  • Version 3: Hands at 10:20.

It’s not perfect, but it’s something. It’s my own little, very rough, version of the OMEGA X-33 Marstimer Classic Style. And you know what? I had a blast making it. It’s not about having a fancy watch for me. It’s about the process, the challenge, and the fun of making something yourself, even if it’s a bit wonky. I guess it’s just proof that anyone can create something, even if it’s not perfect. You just gotta get your hands dirty and give it a try.
