That Omega, yeah, Speedmaster, they call it. Fast, I reckon, like a speeding bullet. My grandson, he’s always on about these fancy watches. Says this one’s a real copy… something. Date, original, all those words. Says it’s a good one.
Me, I don’t know about all that. Clock’s a clock, far as I’m concerned. Tells the time, that’s all that matters. But he’s all excited, says it’s like the ones they wore on the Moon. The Moon! Can you believe it? Back in my day, we didn’t even have a color TV, let alone folks walking on the Moon.
He keeps going on about this Speedmaster Date, says it’s special. This Omega Speedmaster, they have many kinds. This one, it’s got a date on it, I guess. So you know what day it is. Handy, I suppose. Though my old calendar works just fine. Been using the same one for years. Got pictures of puppies on it.
This original order thing, that’s important, he says. Means it’s the real deal, not some cheap knock-off. Like those fellas selling watches down by the market. You gotta watch out for them, they’ll sell you anything. This Omega, though, it’s supposed to be good. Been around since…oh, what was it…1957, he said? A long time, that’s for sure. Longer than I’ve been married, and that’s saying something.
He wanted to buy this Omega Speedmaster, been talking about it for months, saving his pennies. It is hard to get one, he says. He says this copy Omega is good as gold. Maybe better. He says there’s lots of fake ones out there. Gotta know what to look for, he says. Like telling a good egg from a bad one. You gotta look close. He showed me some pictures, real ones and fake ones. They look the same to me, but he can spot the difference.
He’s been reading all about it. Says there’s a whole guide, tells you how to tell a real one from a fake one. He said it is a “comprehensive guide”, can you believe him use this word? My grandson is so smart. This Omega Speedmaster, they got all these little details. Like the markings, and the way the hands move. And the way it feels, he says. A real one, it feels…solid. Like it’ll last forever. Like my old cast iron skillet.
He says some folks, they want a fancier one. This Speedmaster 38, he called it. Smaller, I guess. For folks with skinny wrists. Like my neighbor, Mildred. She’s got wrists like a bird’s legs. This one’s more…refined, he says. Whatever that means. Still a Speedmaster, though. Still a good one.
This whole watch thing, it’s a big deal, I guess. More than just telling time. It is like a treasure. Like those old coins my husband used to collect. He’d spend hours looking at them, polishing them. This watch, it’s the same way, I reckon. Something special. Something to hold onto.
Me, I’m happy with my old clock. But I’m happy he’s happy. That’s all that matters, ain’t it? Seeing your grandkids happy. Makes all the aches and pains worth it. And if this copy Omega Speedmaster Date original order makes him happy, well, then I guess it’s a good thing. Even if it does cost more than a month’s worth of groceries.
